If you enjoying taking day trips from Sarasota, FL, take I-75 South toward Naples and exit at the Pine Island Road Exit to Pine Island.  Cross the bridge about 10 miles down the road at Matlacha, Fl, the gateway to Pine Island.  Stop for a quick lunch at Bert’s Bar & Grille on the water and enjoy fresh seafood.  We feasted on the special shrimp basket with homemade chips and grouper bits with chips.  A boat captain was sitting behind us talking about his morning catch.  We were probably eating it!

After your leisurely lunch, cross “Florida’s Fishinest Bridge” to Pine Island.  Turn right and wandering around until you see open water.  On the left is an adorable cottage featuring fine art, pottery, blown glass, sculpture and jewelry.  You’ll even find a few pieces of handpainted furniture at this gallery.  This is Crossed Palms Gallery at Bokeelia, Florida on Charlotte Harbor.  Cheryl, one of the owners, entertained us with her island stories as we browsed through the gallery.

Pine Island fishing boating, tennis and golf are offered.  Many new restaurants, professional buildings and fitness facilities have been built since 2004.  This was our first visit to the island since Hurricane Charley, and we were amazed at the change.  If a day trip isn’t for you, plan a visit to Mangomania, Pine Island’s festival in July”.  Ten thousand visitors hit the island to celebrate “fruits, exotic plants and farm goods as well as the island’s array of artistic talent.  Join them for a few days!

This small island is home to many talented artists in the Matlacha, St. James City, Pineland and Bokeelia areas as well as potters.  Lodging is available at the Tarpon Lodge Inn on the island if you are looking for an excellent bed and breakfast.
